whispers in the corridors

The unfolding political row in Kerala over the Adani Group’s move to divest a 49 percent stake in the strategic Vizhinjam International Seaport is expected to lose steam. The controversy surrounds the sale of stake to Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). However, industry insiders note that MSC is already a trusted player in India’s maritime sector, holding similar partnerships with Adani at both the Mundra port in Gujarat and the Ennore port in Tamil Nadu.
Given MSC’s existing footprint in these critical domestic ports, obtaining the mandatory central security clearance for the Vizhinjam project is unlikely to face major hurdles, despite the port’s high strategic value at the country's southern tip.
Addressing opposition concerns, Adani Ports clarified that it has merely initiated the procedure for the stake sale. The transaction will only be finalized after securing all mandatory government and regulatory approvals. The company emphasized that this conditional process has been transparently disclosed in its declarations under SEBI regulations. With compliance and precedents firmly in place, the brewing controversy in Kerala is poised to turn into a damp squib.
