IPS Abhinav Sonkar is a 2019 batch Officer of Odisha cadre and is currently posted as Superintendent of Police in Dhenkanal, Odisha.His Mission for the district is to empower and uplift the weaker sections of society especially women and children through crime prevention,victim support and speedy justice.

“The first focus is the prevention of crimes”.To address this a  multifaceted approach is being devised.First is Setting up of Mahila Shishu Desks at every police station.“These are staffed by women officers who handle distress calls,counsel victims and help with FIR registration”he explains. In many cases,they also step in when negotiation between the husband and family is required.

The second initiative is anti-eve-teasing drives.“We’ve identified hotspots where such incidents happen frequently” says Sonkar.“Through regular patrolling, data checks, and verification of suspicious individuals,we’re working to create a safer environment.”Additionally  as many young girls are hesitant to file formal complaints.He said “If needed, we take action ourselves and register cases based on police reports” 

Third and another major component of his approach is Community Policing and Outreach through initiatives such as “Our Police”. Under this all police stations are engaging with local stakeholders to raise awareness,offer support and build trust.“These programs aim to sensitize the community and encourage cooperative safety measures”He shares

Fourth is display of safety measures in schools and colleges“We have reached out to educational institutions and requested them to display helpline numbers prominently.”He said. This also allows students,especially young girls easy access to support resources.

“The second focus is delivering justice to the victims by ensuring punishment to the offenders”

For this Coordinated efforts are being taken with public prosecutors and are also being sensitized to handle women and child related cases on a fast-track basis.

Monitoring of Trials and Supporting Victims“Time is a critical factor ,delays can discourage victims or weaken their resolve.legal team and public prosecutors are closely monitoring trial schedules.”He explained.Additionally victims are also briefed and guided to help them become familiar and comfortable with the court environment.

Through these coordinated efforts,IPS Abhinav Sonkar is working to create a safer, more responsive and supportive system for women and children in Dhenkanal.
