Reports suggest that an Indian corporate is eyeing maintenance rights for the Bagram Airbase

An Indian corporate entity is reportedly exploring the possibility of securing maintenance rights for Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base, the country’s largest military facility, which has remained a focal point of geopolitical scrutiny ever since former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly pushed for its return to American control. The development gains added significance as Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister is scheduled to visit New Delhi in the coming days, marking a fresh window for bilateral engagement. India’s Afghanistan policy has in recent months shown signs of calibrated pragmatism, with quiet outreach to Taliban authorities. Back in April, Anand Prakash, India’s key point-person on Afghan affairs, held a rare meeting with Taliban’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, signalling New Delhi’s willingness to keep communication channels open. If the bid for Bagram proceeds, it could offer India a strategic operational foothold in Afghanistan, deepening its presence in the country’s reconstruction and logistical network, even as regional power equations around the base remain sensitive.
