Global Ranking Boost in forest cover

India’s forest cover rose to 25.17% of land area (827,357 sq km), climbing to 9th globally in total forest area (FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025, October 2025 release). Annual gain: 3rd worldwide. However, ecologists criticise broad definitions (including plantations) masking biodiversity loss.
