whispers in the corridors

The government is preparing to give the green light for Census 2027, marking a major administrative exercise after the unprecedented delay of the 2021 Census. According to preliminary information, policy clearance for the nationwide enumeration could be granted soon, paving the way for groundwork and pilot surveys in 2026. The Census, India’s most extensive data-collection effort, will serve as the foundation for crucial decisions on welfare schemes, political representation, and resource distribution. Officials are expected to integrate advanced digital tools, GIS mapping, and mobile data entry to improve accuracy and efficiency. Conducted every ten years, the exercise will also update key demographic and socio-economic indicators amid significant shifts in population, migration, and urbanization patterns. Once approved, the process will likely involve multiple ministries, with the Office of the Registrar General of India leading the execution.
