India and Germany are set to finalize a landmark $8 billion submarine deal!

India and Germany are set to finalize a landmark $8 billion submarine deal under Project 75(I) very soon, potentially by March 2026. The agreement involves ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) partnering with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) to construct six advanced conventional submarines equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) in Mumbai. This will boost India's naval underwater capabilities amid an aging fleet, with full technology transfer promoting 'Make in India'. Negotiations gained momentum after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's January 2026 visit, marking a historic defense partnership. The first submarine delivery is projected in about seven years post-signing.
