GOI moves big against deepfakes. Mandates social media curbs against synthetic content

India has tightened its IT Rules, 2021 to curb misuse of AI‑generated media. The amendments define “synthetically generated information” (SGI) as AI‑created audio, visual, or audiovisual content that mimics reality, while excluding routine edits and filters. Intermediaries and social media platforms must now prevent, label, and swiftly act on illegal or harmful synthetic content such as deepfakes, obscene material, false documents, or explosives‑related data. SGI tools must warn users that misuse could invite criminal penalties, account suspension, or identity disclosure. Platforms are required to label all synthetic content with permanent metadata and unique identifiers and prevent tampering. Significant social media must obtain user declarations when content is synthetic and display clear labels before it is shown. Platforms must also report violations, regularly inform users of rules and penalties, and implement technical safeguards. The move marks India’s strongest push yet against deceptive and harmful deepfakes.
