Bangladesh’s New Government to Open up Power Purchase Agreement with Adani Group? (UPDATED)
As per sourced Bangladesh’s government is weighing a fresh push to renegotiate its long‑term power purchase agreement with Adani Power, reflecting mounting concern over high import costs and alleged flaws in the contract. The 2017 deal, signed under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, ties Bangladesh to buying electricity for 25 years from Adani’s coal‑fired Godda plant in Jharkhand, which currently supplies around a tenth of the country’s power. Reviews ordered by Bangladesh’s High Court and an interim administration‑appointed committee have flagged “one‑sided” provisions on coal pricing and tax exemptions, concluding that power from Godda is significantly more expensive than from domestic plants and other Indian imports. Advisers say Dhaka’s first preference is to sharply lower prices through renegotiation, with cancellation or international arbitration kept as last‑resort options.
