IPS Abilash G leading the fight against human trafficking in Balangir, Odisha

IPS Abilash G ,a 2018 batch officer of Odisha cadre currently posted as Superintendent of Police,Balangir has made combating human trafficking and dismantling networks a major focus.

Balangir has long witnessed large-scale labour migration to cities such as Surat, Mumbai and southern states including Tamil Nadu and Kerala. However, within this migration trend lies a darker reality as women and children sometimes fall prey to trafficking under false promises of high wages and secure employment.

“Balangir Police have registered more than 200 trafficking-related cases, many under Section 137 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to kidnapping and abduction.” He shared

Under Abilash’s leadership efforts have been both proactive and multifaceted.Rescue operations were conducted across multiple states in India while also ensuring safe rehabilitation of rescued women and children.

Enforcement is only one part of the strategy, the district police has also focused on prevention. The police have started awareness campaigns in villages before the migration season begins. Labourers are encouraged to register with the Labour Department, get labour cards and inform the local police station before leaving for work.

“If migration is streamlined and documented, middlemen and traffickers lose the space to exploit vulnerable families, especially those facing language barriers in new states” he explains.

By combining strict action with awareness and coordination, IPS Abilash G is working to ensure that migration remains a safe way to earn a livelihood and not a path to exploitation.
