Policing has traditionally been known for responding after a crime has already occurred but this is changing in Akola through an innovative initiative called Project Trinetra.At the helm of this initiative is IPS Archit Chandak, a 2018 batch officer currently posted as Superintendent of Police, Akola in Maharashtra.

Now, what is Project Trinetra? it is a data driven preventive policing model that uses crime records to identify repeat offenders into High, Medium, and Low risk levels and predict/ prevent crime before they happen.It also helps police act early through targeted monitoring and smarter patrolling instead of waiting for crimes to happen.

The numbers tell the story it self. In just  three months repeat crime reduced by 64%. Prior to the launch of Project Trinetra, June, July and August, 70 repeat offenders committed crimes while after its implementation this number dropped sharply to 25 repeat offenders.

At the heart of Project Trinetra lies a simple but powerful idea: a small group of habitual offenders is responsible for a disproportionate share of crimes. While police officers are often aware of this intuitively, the absence of structured real-time intelligence makes timely action difficult.ProjectTrinetra bridges this gap by organising existing police data and converting it into actionable insights/leads.

The AI Model analyses past crime records,offender histories, time patterns and locations to identify repeat offenders who are most likely to reoffend in the near future.Instead of random patrolling or surveillance,police resources are deployed with precision.High-risk individuals are identified early and stations are alerted well in advance, allowing officers to take proportionate preventive measures such as counselling, targetedmonitoring,beat checks and community engagement.

Designed consciously,the initiative is designed as a decision-support system and not as a replacement for human judgment.Every alert generated by the system is advisory in nature. Final decisions rest entirely with police officers,ensuringaccountability,fairness and adherence to constitutional safeguards.

Additionally Focused on fairness ,no profiling based on caste, religion or socio-economic background is used, and the focus remains strictly on behaviour and prior criminal activity.

The sharp decline in repeat offences suggests that early identification and focused intervention can act as a strong deterrent.Police now plan patrols more clearly,identify suspects faster and uses manpower more effectively. At the same time,repeat offenders know they are being closely watchedwhich discourages them from committing crimes again.

IPS ArchitChandak’s approach shows how technology, when used responsibly can strengthen policing from being reactive to proactive and enhance safety.
