Drone Force, Data Force, Cyber Commands: India’s Bold 2047 Roadmap to Multi-Domain Warfare and Jointness

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled “Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military” recently at South Block, a comprehensive blueprint prepared by Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff to transform the armed forces into a modern, integrated, multi-domain force by India’s centenary of Independence.

Launched in the presence of CDS Gen Anil Chauhan, Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Adm D.K. Tripathi, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the document outlines phased reforms: a transition phase until 2030, consolidation till 2040, and excellence by 2047.

It emphasises deeper tri-service jointness, integrated theatre commands, and multi-domain operations across land, sea, air, cyber, space and cognitive domains. Emerging technologies — AI, drones, cyber defence, geospatial intelligence and autonomous systems — take centre stage, alongside accelerated Atmanirbharta through indigenous platforms.

Key proposals include new tri-service entities: a Defence Geo-Spatial Agency, Data Force, Drone Force, Cognitive Warfare Action Force, plus dedicated Space and Cyber Commands. Doctrinal shifts will move from net-centric to data-centric warfare, prioritising decision superiority.

Singh called the vision the cornerstone of Viksit Bharat 2047. “We are building an agile, self-reliant force capable of deterring adversaries across the full spectrum of conflict,” he stressed. Military leaders hailed it as a decisive leap towards technological dominance and national security in an evolving geostrategic landscape.
