Know the diplomats to be lauded for India’s Maldives reset: Vikram Misri and G. Balasubramanian

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, are the two key bureaucrats at the forefront of rebuilding and stabilising India–Maldives ties after the sharp “India‑Out” phase.Misri has spearheaded high‑level diplomacy, coordinating the Prime Minister’s state visit to Malé, shaping the reset narrative, and overseeing the extension of a fresh line of credit and debt‑relief measures that underpin the renewed economic partnership.

Balasubramanian, on the ground in Malé, has operationalised the thaw by engaging the Maldivian leadership, managing public‑diplomacy fall‑out from the “India‑Out” campaign, and paving the way for projects in infrastructure, water‑sanitation and connectivity. Together, they have overseen the maiden withdrawal of roughly ₹3,000 crore under the SAARC‑linked currency‑swap‑style framework, signalling India’s serious financial backing and marking a genuine paradigm shift in how the relationship has been recalibrated since the earlier rupture.
