IAS, IPS and IFS positions to be cut in Himachal Pradesh?
The Himachal Pradesh government is undertaking a major administrative restructuring to optimize officer deployment and eliminate underutilization across state services. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced plans to significantly reduce the number of sanctioned posts within the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Forest Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS) cadres.
Under the proposed downsizing, the state's IAS cadre strength will decrease from 153 to 130 positions, while the IFS cadre will drop from 118 to 83. The IPS cadre will similarly undergo a reduction, though specific target figures for police officers have not yet been disclosed.
Addressing the core rationale behind the decision, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the current framework leaves numerous high-ranking officials without sufficient operational workloads. The government aims to ensure that administrative talent and capabilities are fully leveraged rather than wasted under the existing structure.
