Saving every drop: IAS Trupti Dhodmise leads water conservation in Sindhudurg with 10,000 bunds and tourism promotion

IAS Trupti Dhodmise, (2019 batch), Collector of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra is focusing on strengthening tourism while addressing the district's pressing water challenges.

Known for its high rainfall, Sindhudurg is currently facing an unusual situation with the district receiving significantly lower rainfall during the monsoon season.

To tackle this drought situation, the administration has constructed more than 10,000 kutcha bunds with active participation from local residents. The initiative aims to slow the flow of rainwater, facilitate groundwater recharge and improve water availability to help the district deal with water scarcity in the coming months.

“The initiative was undertaken through collective efforts involving the local people, political representatives and administration with the community playing a central role in its implementation.” she shared

Beyond this, the focus is on developing Sindhudurg's tourism potential. With its approximately 220-km-long coastline, the district offers considerable opportunities for coastal tourism and fisheries. "We basically want to develop the coastline with respect to tourism and fisheries" she quoted
