Cleaner Udhampur (J&K): How IAS Saloni Rai is Strengthening Waste Management

IAS Saloni Rai is a 2016 Batch Officer of AGMUT Cadre and is currently posted as Deputy Commissioner of Udhampur in J&K. Known for effective leadership, Her Vision for the district focuses on improving waste management through removal of legacy waste, improving garbage collection and disposal, and increasing public awareness.
 
Recognizing the problem of lack of modern waste processing facilities, Rai has introduced new waste management segregation vehicles with multiple chambers to facilitate systematic disposal "Our focus is on four-way segregation and scientific disposal to ensure proper waste processing, "she explained. Additionally, under her leadership effort are being made to strengthen door to door collection of waste.
 
To tackle decades old legacy waste, techniques like biomining are being used to clear accumulated waste while measures are also being taken to ensure that newly generated waste is effectively treated “The legacy waste, which has been accumulating for the past 20-30 years, is now being cleared. At the same time, we are ensuring that fresh waste is processed in a sustainable manner,” she added.
 
Beyond waste management, to instil a sense of responsibility among children regarding littering. Plans are underway to set up innovative structures designed to engage and educate young minds "We are in the process of identifying locations to establish these unique installations to encourage children not to litter," she shared.
 
To make Udhampur more cleaner and sustainable Rai noted, "We have achieved substantial progress in this area, and more initiatives are in the pipeline."
