whispers in the corridors

The growing disillusionment among young officers in PSBs with the aging leadership of banking trade unions is becoming increasingly evident. These veteran leaders, who have remained at the helm for decades, often cling to power through manipulative practices, sidelining fresh perspectives and genuine democratic participation. Over the years, trade unions have amassed huge financial reserves, built through the contributions of ordinary members. However, instead of using these resources to effectively champion the rights of the 7.5 lakh-strong banking fraternity, the leadership has largely failed to address pressing issues such as:
•Implementation of a five-day workweek
•Improvement in working conditions
•Filling up sanctioned vacancies
The recent withdrawal of the strike call is just another instance of how these leaders continue to compromise on crucial demands, leaving ordinary members frustrated and disillusioned. Their reluctance to take a firm stand raises serious questions about their commitment to the workforce they claim to represent. It is perhaps time for young officers to demand structural reforms within these unions—ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and leadership renewal. A generational shift could inject much-needed dynamism into these organizations, making them more responsive to the real concerns of today’s banking professionals. If the unions fail to evolve, they risk losing relevance altogether.
