Revathi will have tough opposition at ITU election

While India has nominated Ms. M. Revathi, Joint Wireless Advisor at the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), as its candidate for Director of the Radio Communication Bureau at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), she will have formidable opposition at the election. In September 2024, France and Germany announced their candidates. To avoid a split in European votes, an informal election was held between the candidates by the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations which was won by the French candidate Eric Fournier. In the event, 37 countries have decided to vote for Fournier and use their diplomatic clout for getting votes from non-European countries. No such unity exists in Asia. The challenge for Indian diplomats is to prove before non-European members that the Revathi is in a better position to mobilise the expertise and skills of the Radio Communication Bureau for challenges ahead.
