whispers in the corridors
Engineers India Limited (EIL) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to provide Engineering Services for “Analysis and Design of Civil Structures of Generic 220 MWe Bharat Small Reactor (BSR)”. This MoU was signed by Director Commercial - EIL and Director Technical - NPCIL in the presence of CMD EIL, Ms. Vartika Shukla and other senior Management officers from both the organizations at EIL office, New Delhi on 24th September, 2025. EIL is a Public Sector Undertaking under the administrative control of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), providing concept to commissioning services across various industrial sectors. NPCIL is a Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, engaged in setting up & operating nuclear power plants across India. The partnership through this MoU, supports GoI’s vision to accelerate nuclear power, enabling clean, green, and reliable energy to strengthen India’s energy security and is a step towards Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat, targeting a nuclear power capacity of 100 GW by 2047. Based on the NPCIL’s experience of design, construction, operation & maintenance of standard 220 MWe PHWRs in India & EIL’s expertise for specialized engineering services, the existing standard design of 220 MWe PHWR is being engineered as a generic design of 220 MWe BSR with implementation of latest safety upgradation, design modifications incorporating latest codes & standards and regulatory requirements. The 220 MWe BSR facilitates faster adoption of these reactors for energy-intensive industries like steel, aluminum, cement etc., providing much needed green energy for their operation and also helps the replacement/phasing out of vintage captive thermal power plants used by these industries. The upgraded civil design of 220 Mwe BSR, in compliance with the latest stringent safety regulations, facilitates large-scale multiplication and deployment of these standardized 220 MWe PHWRs across different locations in India. With the above upgrade of the Indigenous technology of 220 Mwe BSR, India's nuclear energy is poised for significant growth towards realizing the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to achieve Net Zero by 2070.
