POLITICAL WHISPERS

Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, S. Jaishankar & J.P. Nadda gets thumbs up in Whisper’s Survey

With speculations doing rounds in political and bureaucratic circles about a reshuffle in the Union Cabinet, an online survey carried out by WhispersintheCorridors has thrown up surprising results about peoples’ choice for the ministerial posts. We received over 200 responses from our readers, the details of which are as follows-

Over 97% of those who participated in the survey were unanimous in their choice of the prized post of Home Ministry and had named it should be retained by Amit Shah. While Amit Shah has been the popular choice, the other contenders named by few are Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and former BJP president Nitin Gadkari. A couple of respondents also preferred the names of Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Jyotiraditya Scindia for the job.

For the Finance Minister’s job, more than 55% respondents preferred the name of Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry. The present incumbent Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman received the backing of about 42% respondents. Others who have been named include Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister for Railways Ashwani Vaishnav, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and the new entrant to the BJP Raghav Chaddha.

The Defence portfolio gets a thumbs up for the present incumbent Rajnath Singh. Almost 90% of the respondents want him to continue as defence minister. Other names that were proposed were Home Minister Amit Shah, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Governor of Mizoram Gen V.K. Singh, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kien Rijiju, NSA Ajit Doval, former CDS Gen MM Narwane and FM Nirmala Sitharaman.

Likewise, the respondents have expressed full faith in the Union External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar for the job of external affairs. More than 95% respondents have named him as the best choice with some naming Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, Harshvardhan Shringla, retired IFS and Rajya Sabha MP.

The fiasco over CBSE class 12 results and valuation resulting in alleged inaccuracies in OEM sheets and the NEET paper leak has badly dented the image of the incumbent Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Very few respondents have named him and leading the race is FM Nirmala Sitharaman and Railways Minister Ashwani Vaishnav. Both have received over 40% support each from the respondents. The other names that have been proposed for the Education Minister’s job include Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, BJP MPs Sudhanshu Trivedi and Jay Panda. A couple have proposed BJP MP Tejasvi Surya and Milind Deora.

For the post of Union Health Minister, the incumbent J.P. Nadda gets about 75% support from the respondents. Other names proposed for the job include Jayant Sinha, Ashwani Vaishnav, Jitin Prasad, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Jyotiraditya Scindia.

(Disclaimer: These are the views of our surfers who participated in the survey. About 203 respondents participated in the online survey on our portal. In no way the results of the survey reflects the editorial position or opinion of Whispers In The Corridors.)

IPS Anand Jain Appointed Ladakh DGP, Expected to Play Key Role in Centre–LAHDC Engagement?

The appointment of IPS officer Anand Jain as Director General of Police, Ladakh, comes at a politically sensitive moment, with New Delhi recalibrating its engagement strategy with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils (LAHDC) in Leh and Kargil. While the role is primarily administrative and security-focused, Jain is expected to play a more nuanced part amid ongoing demands for statehood, Sixth Schedule protections, and greater local autonomy. Sources indicate the Centre is keen to maintain stability while reopening structured dialogue with regional stakeholders. In this context, Jain’s experience in handling complex law-and-order environments and his familiarity with centre-state coordination could position him as a key interlocutor behind the scenes. His role may involve facilitating confidence-building measures, ensuring a stable security backdrop for negotiations, and maintaining communication channels between civil society groups and the administration. With Ladakh witnessing periodic protests and political mobilization, the DGP’s office could emerge as an important node in managing both perception and ground realities. Whether Jain’s tenure evolves beyond policing into a quiet diplomatic role will be closely watched.

India Likely to Emerge as Key Defence Supplier to Gulf Amid US Retrenchment

India is in preliminary talks with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to export the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the indigenous Akashteer air-defence command and control system, according to sources. The discussions reflect New Delhi’s growing push to position itself as a reliable defence supplier to Gulf nations at a time when the United States is seen to be gradually recalibrating its regional commitments. The BrahMos missile, jointly developed with Russia, is among the world’s fastest operational cruise missiles and can be deployed across land, sea and air platforms. Its export, however, will require Moscow’s approval. Akashteer, meanwhile, is an advanced network-centric system designed to integrate multiple sensors and weapons for real-time air defence responses. Sources indicate that while negotiations are underway, no final agreement has been reached. The talks come as the UAE seeks to bolster its defence capabilities amid evolving regional threats to critical infrastructure. The potential deal underscores deepening India-UAE strategic ties and aligns with India’s broader ambition to expand defence exports, building on recent BrahMos deals with the Philippines and ongoing engagements with Southeast Asian partners.

Is India Set to Replace Germany in the Franco-Led 6th Gen Fighter Jet FCAS Program?

With Germany’s role in the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) increasingly uncertain amid funding disputes and industrial disagreements, speculation is growing around a potential new partner: India. Sources indicate that France may be exploring New Delhi as a strategic replacement, aligning with its broader push to diversify defense partnerships beyond Europe.

For India, the proposition is attractive but complex. The Indian Air Force’s long-standing requirement for next-generation air dominance platforms, combined with delays in indigenous programs like AMCA, makes FCAS a compelling option. However, unlike previous collaborations, India is expected to push firmly for co-development rights, full technology transfer, and equal industrial participation.

This could create friction. France has traditionally guarded core technologies within FCAS, particularly around engine design and stealth systems. Any meaningful Indian entry would likely require restructuring the program’s governance and intellectual property frameworks.

Geopolitically, such a shift would signal a major realignment—bringing India deeper into European defense ecosystems while offering France a financially and strategically reliable partner. The key question remains whether Paris is willing to dilute control to secure New Delhi’s participation.

Ongoing Modernisation and Indigenous Efforts

Continued progress on projects like drone deliveries (e.g., JK 250e to Army), target systems for air defence training, and indigenous kamikaze drone programmes by IAF. Broader 2026 trends include Su-30MKI upgrades, hypersonic developments, and layered air defence expansions.

Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy, IAS calls upon students to build a spiritually grounded, tech-empowered & nationally conscious workforce

Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy called upon the students to build a spiritually grounded, technologically empowered and nationally conscious work force that serves as the primary agent of social transformation - from grassroots to the global stage. The 1991 batch, Kerala cadre IAS officer popularly known as Kerala’s anti-corruption crusader officer was speaking at a function felicitating students of academic excellence in memory of Sri. Kummaya Mukundan (freedom fighter) at Mahe (Pondicherry).

He reminded an august audience at Mahe (Pondicherry) that the Indian Freedom Movement was a massive ideological incubator. According to Dr. Swamy, the struggle against British imperialism nurtured core civilizational values – secularism, democracy, socialism and self-reliance. These principles continue to define modern India’s socio-political fabric and constitutional identity.

The Movement recognized and cultivated a belief that the nation must respect all faiths and treat all citizens equally regardless of religion.

The boycott of foreign goods was tied to the concept of economic self-reliance (Swadeshi) fostering deep national pride and sustainable localized development. Last but not least the freedom struggle championed the cause of Ahimsa and Satyagraha viz the core strategies of non-violence and truth demonstrating the immense power of mass mobilization and proving that moral resolve could dismantle empires. Dr. Swamy called upon the younger generation to uphold these universally accepted principles.

DATE WITH RTI

Adding new grounds for rejection of the RTI application

The appellant sought the details of employees appointed under the Reserved Quota in the Assistant Grade-III cadre in the Food Corporation of India in a specific proforma. The PIO replied that an information shall ordinarily be provided in the form in which it is sought unless it would disproportionately divert the resources of the public authority or would be detrimental to the safety or preservation of the record in question and denied the information. Before the CIC, the Respondent submitted that the appellant sought information about SC/ST/OBC employees in Assistant Grade III Cadre from 2021 to 2024 along with their verified caste certificates in a tabular format given by him. The respondent submitted that there are around 6000 employees in their department and the compilation of the sought information in desired format would disproportionately divert the resources of the public authority. Hence, the aforesaid information was denied U/s 7(9) of the RTI Act. During the hearing, the respondent additionally pleaded that the caste certificates of the employees are exempted U/s 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act. On query by CIC whether the respondent confirms for placing on record his plea for exemption U/s 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act as the same was not earlier mentioned in reply of the CPIO, the respondent confirmed. The CIC observed that the respondent gave an appropriate reply to the appellant. The CIC held that the respondent has pleaded additional grounds that the sought information is exempted U/s 8(1)(j) of the RTI Act during the hearing, and the same is also found to be appropriate. The CIC rejected the appeal.

Comments

Additional grounds which were not considered earlier can be asserted during the hearing before the CIC. Even the grounds for rejection of the information can be changed withdrawing the earlier clause and replacing it by a new one.
