Om Birla's Rare Mediation in 131st Amendment Bill Debate Draws Political Observers' Note !

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla made headlines by actively intervening during a heated exchange between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader KC Venugopal over the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026. The clash centered on a "guarantee" clause amid debates on women's reservation and seat increase to 850.
Amit Shah proposed adding the clause and reintroducing the bill after a one-hour recess if approved by the Speaker. Birla urged both sides to resolve the issue directly on the House floor, showcasing impartial mediation rarely seen from the chair.
Despite this effort, the bill failed to secure the required two-third majority (298 for, 230 against), marking a setback for the government. Political observers have taken note of Birla's proactive role in bridging treasury-opposition divides, calling it a refreshing departure from partisan perceptions of Speakers.
This episode highlights Birla's push for consensus in a polarized Parliament, even as southern states voiced delimitation concerns. Analysts note it bolsters his image amid prior no-confidence motions against him.
First Back-Channel Engagement Since Operation Sindoor between India & Pakistan takes place !
For the first time since India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025, Indian and Pakistani strategic experts, parliamentarians, and former diplomats have quietly re-engaged through a series of back-channel meetings aimed at stabilizing ties. At least, four such interactions have taken place over the past several months, signalling a cautious revival of Track 2 diplomacy between the two sides after a prolonged freeze in formal engagement.
The first meeting was convened roughly two months after the conflict, marking an early attempt by non-official stakeholders to reopen communication channels amid heightened tensions. Subsequent discussions have continued intermittently, bringing together a mix of policy insiders, retired officials, and strategic community voices from both countries.
These engagements have largely focused on reducing escalation risks, maintaining communication lines, and exploring limited areas of mutual understanding without direct government involvement. While no formal outcomes have been announced, the very resumption of dialogue reflects a recognition within influential circles in both countries of the need to prevent further deterioration in bilateral relations.
The development is particularly significant given the near-total breakdown in official diplomatic engagement following Operation Sindoor, making these meetings the only sustained channel of interaction between the two sides.

Amid growing unease within Tata Trusts, murmurs around governance and boardroom cohesion are beginning to surface more openly. According to media reports, at least one trustee has flagged a “loss of order” within the institution, suggesting that the time may be ripe for external intervention of a credible nature.
The proposal being informally discussed is significant: the possible nomination of one or two eminent individuals by the government figures such as former judges or distinguished scientists to help restore institutional balance and credibility. While this is far from an official position, the very emergence of such a suggestion signals deeper concerns within one of India’s most influential philanthropic bodies.
Traditionally insulated from direct state involvement, any move in this direction would mark a notable shift in how legacy institutions navigate internal dissent and public accountability. It also raises larger questions about governance standards in trusts that straddle public impact and private legacy.
