IIT Kharagpur reaffirms its academic excellence on 75th Foundation Day (UPDATED)

On the momentous occasion of its 75th Foundation Day, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) reaffirmed its position at the forefront of academic excellence, technological innovation, and global collaboration. The Institute marked this significant milestone with the unveiling of several transformative initiatives, setting the stage for the next era of growth and leadership in education, research, and community impact. The Foundation Day celebrations were graced by several distinguished dignitaries, including Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, who delivered the plenary address; Ms. Kathy Giles-Diaz, US Consul General in Kolkata; T V Narendran, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Kharagpur; and Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur. During the event, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur, laid the foundation stone for five visionary initiatives, underlining the Institute’s commitment to empowering minds, enriching lives, and shaping the future. SETU – Support, Empathy, Transformation, and Upliftment: A wellness center initiative aimed at providing a dedicated hub for mental health and well-being, ensuring the IIT Kharagpur community has the support it needs to thrive. NAVYA – Nalanda Amenity & Vibrant Youthful Arena: A dynamic new cultural and social hub, designed to foster deeper connections, enhance student life, and provide a platform for creativity and cultural exchange. CREATE – Center for Recreation, Engagement, Arts, Technology, and Expression: A state-of-the-art recreation and co-curricular facility that will serve over 15,000 students, offering a space for creativity, wellness, and personal growth. AARAM – Accommodation and Reception of Academic Members: A solution to address accommodation needs for research scholars, visiting international faculty, alumni, and short-term academic program attendees, supporting IIT Kharagpur's global engagement strategy. Manekshaw Centre of Excellence for Defence and Security Research: A forward-looking center that will nurture the next generation of innovators, researchers, and leaders, driving advancements in technology, science, and society. Furthering its commitment to global leadership, IIT Kharagpur announced several other transformative initiatives. These include a high-value Platinum Jubilee Endowment to foster deep-tech innovation and entrepreneurship, an Outreach Centre in the USA to expand global engagement, and the establishment of Centres of Excellence on Digital Twins and Med-Tech Convergence to make advanced diagnostics like MRI accessible to underserved communities. The Institute will also launch a Skill Development Centre to train rural healthcare workers in collaboration with the foundation for innovations in Health, as well as a pioneering Scholarship model aimed at nurturing India’s brightest young talent. Other initiatives include a Global Visiting Fellowship Program to bring world-class researchers to IIT Kharagpur. As part of the Foundation Day celebrations, IIT Kharagpur also recognized outstanding individuals for their contributions to technology, research, and society. The Young Alumni Achiever Award was presented to 11 exceptional IIT Kharagpur alumni, honouring their achievements in innovations, technological advancements, leadership, and social impact. The Institute presented 14 Faculty Excellence Awards, recognizing exceptional academic contributions, and 27 Staff Excellence Awards, along with 6 Distinguished Service Awards. A total of 46 employees were celebrated for their 25 years of uninterrupted service to the Institute. The prestigious Nina Saxena Excellence in Technology Award 2024 was conferred upon Dr. Chandra Prakash and his team at ISRO for their ground-breaking work on Mobile Satellite Service Based National Satcom Networks for Asset Tracking Applications. Prof. Sunanda Dasgupta from the Department of Chemical Engineering received the G S Sanyal Faculty Excellence Award for his pioneering work in Microfluidics and Microscale Transport Processes. The Hall of Fame Award was presented to Arjun Malhotra, Co-founder and Vice-Chairman of HCL Group, for his exemplary service in the IT and tech industry. Several faculty members were honored with Institute Chair Professorships. A. S. Davis Chair Professorship was awarded to Prof. Maddali Ramgopal from the Department of Mechanical Engineering; Surojit & Sanchayita Chair Professorship was given to Prof. Niloy Ganguly from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering; and Gajria Chair Professorship went to Prof. Nilmoni Sarkar from the Department of Chemistry. The Gajria Faculty Excellence Award was presented to Prof. Santanu Panda, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry. Cultural performances were also a highlight of the day, with special performances by tribal school children. Keynote speakers such as Dr. Ranjit Rath, CMD of Oil India Ltd shared his insights on Industry-Academia collaboration and Ajit Gupte, Ambassador of India to Germany, shared their insights on Indo-German cooperation and international collaborations.
