NHSRCL Signs Agreement for Bullet Train Project in Maharashtra (UPDATED)

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has signed a key agreement with Larsen & Toubro Limited for the design, supply, and construction of track and related works for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project in Maharashtra. The contract covers about 157 km of double-line alignment between Mumbai and Zaroli village at the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, including four stations and a rolling stock depot at Thane.
The project employs Japan’s Shinkansen ballast-less slab track system, consisting of an RC track bed, cement asphalt mortar (CAM), pre-cast track slabs, and high-speed rails with fasteners. Similar track construction work is already progressing in Gujarat, where over 200 km of viaduct has been laid under packages T-2 and T-3, both awarded to Indian firms, enhancing domestic capabilities in high-speed rail construction.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Japan Railway Technical Service (JARTS), NHSRCL has trained over 400 engineers and technicians in advanced slab track construction techniques in Gujarat. A similar training initiative will be launched in Maharashtra prior to the commencement of track works there.
As of September 8, 2025, the project has achieved significant milestones: 320 km of viaduct construction, 408 km of pier foundations, 17 river bridges, and 202 km of track bed completed. Additionally, work is progressing on the 21 km tunnel between BKC and Shilphata, and seven mountain tunnels in Palghar district, with elevated station structures in Gujarat nearing completion.
