IPS Raja Babu Singh wins State Biodiversity Award for transforming PTS Tighra into green ecosystem

For the first time in the history of the Indian Police Service, Raja Babu Singh has received a State Biodiversity Award for leading a large-scale ecological restoration initiative. Singh, 1994 batch MP cadre officer was conferred with the State Annual Biodiversity Award 2025 by the Madhya Pradesh State Biodiversity Board for his Police Eco Project PTS Tighra, Gwalior.

Spread across nearly 172 acres, the project has transformed barren land into a lush green ecosystem through scientific ecological restoration and community participation. Under Singh’s leadership over 15,000 indigenous and fruit-bearing saplings including Khejri, Peelu, Neem and Gular have been planted alongside medicinal species and Vetiver grass to improve soil health, water retention and carbon sequestration.

The initiative goes beyond plantation drives aiming to support birds, butterflies and local biodiversity. It also incorporates rainwater harvesting structures, bunding across seasonal runnels, seed broadcasting and chop-and-drop methods to revive degraded landscapes.

Executed entirely on a zero budget community participation model, the initiative has become an inspiring example of ecological conservation led by the police force, proving that environmental protection can truly become a people’s movement.

Looking ahead, similar projects are underway in PTS Sagar, Indore's Datuni Range and Dewas Hill. Additionally ahead of the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh in Ujjain, Singh is leading a campaign to plant 1,00,000 Vetiver grass slips around water bodies.
